This tool has two parts: a vocabulary confidence check, and hands-on practice with four real-data population calculations. Nothing here is graded — it's designed to show you (and your teacher) where you're starting from.
1Part 1 — Vocabulary confidence check
For each of the 18 terms, click one of three buttons:
🔴 Not yet — I don't know this term.
🟡 Sort of — I've heard it but I'm not confident.
🟢 Confident — I could explain this to someone else.
Whichever you click, the full definition and a worked example appear underneath — so rating yourself honestly (even 🔴) always gets you the answer immediately. A live counter at the top tracks how many terms you've rated in each colour, and once you've rated every term it builds a short focus list of the terms you marked red or yellow.
2Part 2 — Four calculations
Four calculator cards, each a word problem built from real, current World Bank data for a randomly chosen country:
Crude Birth Rate = (Live births ÷ Total population) × 1,000
Crude Death Rate = (Deaths ÷ Total population) × 1,000
Rate of Natural Increase = (CBR − CDR) ÷ 10
Dependency Ratio = [(Pop 0–14 + Pop 65+) ÷ Pop 15–64] × 100
Read the word problem, work out the answer with the formula shown above it, type your answer, and click Check. You'll see whether you were right, the correct answer, and the full worked calculation — every time. Click New problem for a different country and fresh numbers; there's no limit.
Tip: your answer doesn't need to match exactly — small rounding differences are accepted. Focus on getting your method right.
3If something looks wrong
| Stuck on "Loading real data…" | Check your internet connection and refresh — numbers are fetched live from the World Bank each time the page opens. |
| Want a fresh start | Refresh the page; nothing is saved between visits. |
Data source: World Bank Open Data (2022) — crude birth rate, crude death rate, total population, and population by age band. Rounded slightly for clean calculation practice, but always from real published statistics for a real country.
